Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. The Hoyas dropped the opener, 2-0 before falling in the nightcap, 9-1. The Hoyas had their five-game winning streak snapped and fall to 6-5 on the season. Georgetown concludes the three-game set with the Gaels on Sunday in a single game that starts at 3 p.m. (EST)
In game one, Hoya sophomore lefty Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) matched a career-high with eight strikeouts against just one walk in eight innings in his fourth start of the season but offensively, the Hoyas were able to collect one hit.
Saint Mary's starter Joel Fountain struck out ten batters and retired 21 straight hitters from the second inning until Georgetown threatened in the ninth.
In the GU ninth, Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./Newport) reached on an error with one out. Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) walked before Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) walked with two outs to load the bases but Fountain struck out the final Hoya batter to end the game.
In game two, Saint Mary's pushed across five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Georgetown plated a run in the sixth on a Drew Dargen (Edmund, Okla./Edmund North) single to score Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) who reached on a fielder's choice.
Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) and Brian Sullivan (Maitland, Fla./Winter Park) combined for three strikeouts and 0 runs in 4.2 innings pf relief.
Dargen finished 2-4 while Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) and Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) each recorded a hit.
Georgetown will visit Cal-Berkeley on Tuesday, March 7 before GU tangles with San Jose St. on Wednesday, March 8.
