Washington, D.C. - Cincinnati broke open a close game in the fourth inning with a pair of runs and scored 11 runs in a four-inning span en route to a 13-3 win over visiting Georgetown at UC Baseball Stadium Friday night. The game, originally slated to start at 6:30 p.m., was pushed back to 8 p.m. because of inclement weather in the area.
The game was a matchup of two of the three teams (West Virginia is the other) in the BIG EAST who entered the weekend tied for seventh place in the battle for a spot in the eight-team postseason tournament next month. Georgetown falls to 17-22 overall with the loss, while the Bearcats improved to 22-15 overall and 6-7 league play.
The Bearcats got a strong outing from freshman right-hander Steve Blevins, who threw a complete game six-hitter, giving up three earned runs with four walks and six strikeouts as he improved to 7-3. Georgetown senior Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) took the loss, yielding nine runs (six earned) on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts as he fell to 3-3 this season.
Cincinnati touched Sizemore for a pair or runs in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. With one out, Josh Harrison was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double from Logan Parker. A single to left-center from Jack Nelson pushed home both runners.
The Hoyas cut the lead in half with a run in the third. Senior shortstop Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./Newport) hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when junior left fielder Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) singled up the middle.
In the fourth, Nick Maragas hit a two-run single to extend Cincinnati's lead to 4-1. The Bearcats would score two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-1, but the Hoyas again cut the lead in half, scoring two runs in the sixth. Senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) hit a leadoff single and scored on a two-run home run from senior Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North).
The Bearcats scored three more times in the sixth and added four in the seventh to widen the gap.
Senior Kevin Lundquist (Oley, Pa./The Hill School) threw the final two innings for the Hoyas, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The teams continue their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
