Tampa, Fla. - University of South Florida starting pitcher Casey Hudspeth scattered six hits, striking out eight Hoya batters over seven innings and allowed just three earned runs to lead the USF baseball team to a 14-3 BIG EAST win over visiting Georgetown Friday night. The Hoyas fall to 19-25 overall, 5-11 in the league.
Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) collected two hits in four at bats for the Hoyas.
Matt McHargue went 2-4 with four RBI for USF while Ty Taborelli and Brian Baisley drove in three runs apiece for the Bulls (20-23, 9-10 BE).
Baisley hit a one-out three run homer in the first inning to give USF a quick 3-0 lead.
Georgetown closed to 3-1 in the third. Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) and Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) walked with two outs ahead of Ryan Craft's (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) RBI double.
USF pushed across two more runs in the bottom half of the third but Georgetown made it 5-3 in the fourth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, deGrijs singled home Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) who ripped a leadoff single. Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./Newport) followed with a sacrifice fly to send home Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) who also singled.
The Bulls responded with two runs of their in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-3 lead before USF sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth en route to seven runs in the frame. The big hits in the inning were McHargue's three-run home run and Taborelli's one-out, two-run double.
Georgetown starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) allowed 12 hits in 4.1 innings. Ben McKean (Concord, Mass./St. Mark's School) fanned two USF hitters in 3.2 innings of relief.
The teams continue the series on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
