Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team scored all three of their goals in the second half in a 3-0 win over visiting George Washington today at North Kehoe Field. The Hoyas improve to 2-1-3 while GW drops to 4-2.
Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), Sarah Fetters (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Shante Cofield (Summit, N.J. Summit) all recorded goals for the Hoyas, who scored three times in a half for the first time this season. Sophomore Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and junior Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) each dished out an assist.
Georgetown dominated the first half of action, out-shooting the Colonials, 9-0. The Hoyas had their first strong opportunity just 6:26 minutes into the game as a shot by senior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) in front the net that was saved by the Colonial keeper, Amie Kern. Zare had another promising scoring chance in the 27th minute, as her header banged off the cross bar and the ball was cleared by the GW defense.
Waskewich broke the scoreless game with a goal off a direct kick at 46:37. After a foul by GW just past midfield, Waskewich sent the direct kick from about 45 yards out towards the net and the ball fell perfectly over the out-stretched hands of Amie Kern for Waskewich's first goal of the season. The score broke a stretch of 319:17 minutes in which the Colonials had not given up a goal.
The Hoyas quickly added another goal just over seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Fetters scored her first goal of the year after the junior took a feed from Zare at the right corner of the 18-yard box and fired a shot over the Colonial keeper.
With two minutes to go, Georgetown sealed the victory. Filauro sent a long cross from the right end line towards the middle of the box where Cofield had broken free of the GW back line. Cofield scored her first marker of the season by blasting the ball, from the six yard box, into the net.
Georgetown junior goalie Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) posted her second consecutive shutout, making one save.
The Hoyas will take to the pitch again on Wednesday, September 13 when GU travels up the road to American University for a 3 p.m. non-league game.
