Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team picked up its first point in BIG EAST play this afternoon with a 1-1 tie against visiting Providence. The Hoyas now stand at 3-5-4 overall and 0-3-1 in the league, while the Friars are at 3-3-4 and 0-3-1 in the conference.
Providence broke the scoreless match with a tally at 58:43 by Erin Mastrodonato. Mastrodonato picked up a free ball outside the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot to the upper right corner for her first goal of the season.
Georgetown evened the scoring at 72:30 on a goal by senior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino), her fourth of the season. Skogen took a cross from junior Sarah Fetters (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) in the middle of the box, headed it back across the box and into the lower left corner. The goal breaks a stretch of 467:13 minutes of scoreless action for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas had other multiple scoring chances in the second half, highlighted by key saves by Elfers on a shot by Fetters and again on a header by Skogen early in the half. In the 81st minute, Providence had a shot deep in the box that was deflected away by a diving Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead).
Skogen had a late chance to end the game in regulation, as she ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but it ricocheted off the cross bar and was cleared by the Friar defense.
Georgetown pressured the Providence defense most of the first overtime period, out-shooting the Friars 3-0, but was unable to score. In the second overtime period, Georgetown stopped Providence from getting any close shots on goal, and both teams saw the game end in a tie.
The first half was played mainly in the Hoya end of the field, with Georgetown holding an 8-2 edge in shots. However, the Friars had the first strong chance on goal about 30 minutes into the half on a corner kick attempt by Christie Gent. Gent sent the ball into the box where it was headed by Danielle Wieneke. The Hoya defense blocked the ball off the line and cleared it out of the zone.
Skogen had two opportunities in the last five minutes of the first stanza. In the 41st minute, she released a shot from just inside the box but it was blocked by a PC defender at the six-yard box. Minutes later, Providence committed a handball at the top of the 18-yard box. Skogen took the direct kick and fired a ball towards the left post. Elfers dove towards her right and made a great save, knocking the ball away.
For the game, GU held a decisive 24-8 edge in shots, but the Friars had five corners to the Hoyas' two. Higgins had two saves for Georgetown, while Elfers blocked five for the visitors.
The Hoyas continue the weekend home stand on Sunday, October 1, when they welcome Connecticut to North Kehoe Field at 1 p.m.
