Washington, D.C. - Fourth-year Georgetown University head women's lacrosse coach Ricky Fried has announced that six student-athletes have signed national letters of intent and will arrive on the Hilltop in the Fall of 2008.
"I am very excited these young ladies have decided to attend Georgetown," said Fried. "Not only have we added a high level of athletism but we're also adding quality people to the program. This group adds a great deal of talent to all three phases - offense, midfield and defense and they all come from winning programs."
Kelly Barnes, M (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) is a three-year letterwinning midfielder for coach Phyllis Kilgour at Radnor High School. Barnes was named All-American by U.S. Lacrosse after leading the team in caused turnovers. Barnes also earned Academic All-American honors in addition to be being selected All-Central League first team, All-Delco first team and All-Main Line in 2006 and 2007. In addition to being a four-year letterwinner on the Radnor soccer field and basketball court, Barnes has also been a member of the WestLine Club Lacrosse team for four years.
Mary Cannon, M (Haverford, Pa./The Agnes Irwin School) is a three-sport athlete who was named Academic All-American and All-Main Line first team after recording 22 goals, 17 assists, 35 draw controls and 56 ground balls for The Agnes Irwin School in 2007. Cannon was a two-time All-Main Line field hockey center midfielder while being an All-Main Line honorable mention swimmer. She helped the Agnes Irwin School to the 2006 Lacrosse Inter-Academic League Championship. Cannon has also been recognized as an All-Main Line honorable mention swimmer and All-main Line first team on the field hockey field as a center midfielder. Cannon's older brother Pete was a four-year standout for the Hoya men's lacrosse team and older brother Brendan is entering his senior season for the Hoyas after earning ECAC Offensive Player of Year honors last year.
Erin Lovett, A (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) is a 5-5 attacker who was named Catholic High School Scholastic Association (CHSSA) Player of the Year for coach Michelle Campolettano in 2007. Lovett was the named the Team MVP in 2006 to go along with All-CHSSA accolades as a sophomore in 2006 after notching 27 goals and 32 assists. As a junior in 2007, she tallied 47 goals and 46 assists to once again earn All-CHSSA honors. During the 2006 season, in her first varsity game, Lovett recorded five goals and three assists to help Kellenberg to its first-ever win over St. Anthony's, 10-8. Lovett has also played for coach Carol Rose and the Long Island YellowJackets club team for five years. Lovett has earned at least two varsity letters for Kellenberg's coss country team earning All-CHSSA honors in 2005 and 2006. Lovett earned the "Young Guns" award from Long Island Newsday as the point guard for Kellenberg's basketball team.
Katie O'Brien, M (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) compiled 17 goals, 13 assists, 61 ground balls, 19 caused turnovers and 19 draw controls in two seasons for Loyola Academy and coach John Dwyer and was named All-Illinois State second team in 2007. O'Brien helped Loyola Academy to the 2006 IHSWLA state championship and an appearance in the 2007 IHSWLA championship game. She is also a four-year member of the Wildcat Elite Lacrosse Club. O'Brien is a defensive specialist for Loyola Academy's volleyball team.
Carly Napora, D (Columbia, Md./McDonogh) is a defensive standout for coach Chris Robinson at McDonogh High School in Baltimore. Napora was named All-Baltimore County and an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) All-Star in 2007 after scooping 48 ground balls and drawing 22 charges in 20 games while helping the team to a No.4 national ranking. Napora captained the 2007 McDonogh H.S. field hockey team to a 16-6-1 overall record and a conference title while also excelling in the mid-distance events for the track team.
Danielle Van Fossan, M (Morristown, N.J./Chatham) is a three-year letterwinning midfielder, helping Chatham High School advance farther in the state tournament in each of the last three seasons. Van Fossan totaled 97 goals, 70 assists, and 164 ground balls in three varstiy seasons for coach Deb Marriott. Van Fossan, who was Chatham High School's leading scorer in 2006 and 2007, was an Academic All-American in 2007 in addition to being named All-Iron Hills Conference seocnd team, Daily Record All-Area second team and All-Morris County honorable mention. Van Fossan is also an accomplished tennis player earning All-Morris County first team honors and All-State Group 2 accolades.
