Georgetown Baseball Has Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped

March 10, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped in extra innings by Akron, 7-6, on Friday night in Bradenton, Fla. The Hoyas (5-8) held a 3-0 advantage after five innings, and despite losing the lead, tied the game in the seventh and eighth innings to force the extra frames.

In the top of the eighth, Akron's Brett Savage (7-1) hit a solo home run to put them ahead once again 6-5. However, in the bottom of the inning Georgetown was able to tie the game once again at 6-6. With sophomore Rob Begin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) on base, an infield single by junior Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) moved him into scoring position with only one out. Akron reliever Jared Patterson then uncorked two wild pitches. The first wild pitch put runners on second and third and the second one allowed Begin to come home with the tying run.

Georgetown was able to draw even at 5-5 in the bottom half on the seventh. Iannetta led off the inning with a single, and that was followed by an infield single from sophomore Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) to put runners on first and second. With two outs, senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) drew a walk to load the bases and then senior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) delivered with a two-run single to tie the game.

Georgetown would have a chance in the ninth after junior Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) doubled to right with two outs, but they could not bring him home.

In the 10th, John Turk hit a two-out RBI single to push Akron in front 7-6. The Hoyas went quietly in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Georgetown scored the first run of the game when Bouchard hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, to put the Hoyas ahead in the first inning. Bouchard is now tied for the team lead in home runs with sophomore Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom).

The Blue and Gray extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth. With one out, Iannetta singled to right and then was brought home on the next play courtesy of a RBI double to left by Muir. With two down, freshman Derek DiGuglielmo (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) singled to left and plated Muir.

The Hoya started to unravel in the sixth when the Zips finally got on the board and cut the lead to 3-1. In the seventh, Akron took the lead 5-3. The first run scored on a third strike that got away from sophomore Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) and allowed an Akron runner to score. The Zips followed with three RBI singles to finish the inning and take a two-run lead to the bottom of the seventh.

For the Hoyas, Bouchard went 3-for-5 and finished a triple shy of the cycle while Iannetta went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Also, Muir went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one batted in as deGrijs went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in

Junior Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs while striking out four batters. Relievers Mike Hoy (Southlake, Texas/Southlake), Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) allowed two earned runs over the final 3 2/3 innings. Kennedy took the loss (1-1), his first of the season, after being able to get a win or a save in his first four appearances of 2007.

The Hoyas play Army on Saturday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m.
