Box Score
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team (18-30, 6-15 BIG EAST) dropped the third and final game of a BIG EAST series with Pittsburgh (22-21, 13-7 BE) on Sunday afternoon, 6-2, at Shirley Povich Field. The game was tied until the fifth inning when the Panthers opened up a three-run lead on the Hoyas.
After falling behind 2-0 in the third, Georgetown was able to answer with two runs of their own and even the score. After back-to-back singles by freshman Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and senior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle), Pitt first baseman Seth Button threw the ball away while trying to pick Elliott off third. However, the throw was wild and Elliott scored to cut Pittsburgh's lead in half. During the same at-bat, senior Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) singled to center which brought home McLaughlin with the game-tying run.
Junior Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) lasted five innings and allowed five runs, three earned on seven hits while striking out four. Saris was relieved by senior Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview), who threw a perfect 1 1/3 innings. Freshman Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work and junior Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) recorded the final two outs for the Hoyas
Georgetown has off during the week but hosts BIG EAST foe Villanova this upcoming weekend in a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 12, starting at 4 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. All games will be played at Shirley Povich Field.
