Washington, D.C. - Three Georgetown University men's lacrosse players swept the ECAC League's major preseason awards and four Hoyas were represented on the preseason team in a vote of the league's coaches announced on Thursday.
Senior attack Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) was selected as the ECAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season and senior Jerry Lambe (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) was tabbed the ECAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight time. Sophomore attack Ricky Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) was selected as the league's preseason Rookie of the Year.
Georgetown, coming off a 12-3 2007 season that saw the team post a perfect 7-0 mark in the ECAC en route to the program's 11th-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, was selected to win the 2008 ECAC title, the ninth-straight season the Hoyas have been selected to win the conference.
Cannon earned second team All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association last year as he led the Hoyas in scoring for the second-straight season, tallying 44 points on 21 goals and 23 assists. He was named the ECAC's Offensive Player of the Year and ranked 19th in the country in assists per game (1.53) and 43rd in the country in points per game (2.93). Cannon recorded 13 multi-point games, seven multi-goal games and seven multi-assist games. He enters his senior year 14th all-time in points scored (113) and eighth all-time in assists (63).
Lambe, a nominee for the Tewaaraton Trophy recognizing the top player in Division I lacrosse, was a second-team All-American selection by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, earned first team All-ECAC honors and was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year last season. Lambe, who picked up 28 ground balls last season, led a defensive unit that allowed less than 10 goals in 12 different games.
Mirabito, who sat out last season, had a strong fall season and could push for a starting spot this season. A standout at Chenango Forks High School, Mirabito was an UnderArmour and USILA All-American as a senior.
Joining them on the Preseason All-ECAC Team are sophomore attack Andrew Brancaccio (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) and defenseman Barney Ehrmann (Baltimore, Md./The Gilman School). Brancaccio was an honorable mention All-America selection last season after finishing fourth on the team with 21 points. He appeared in 15 games, starting 12 times, and was second on the team with 20 goals. Ehrmann was a second-team All-ECAC selection and finished fourth on the team with 43 ground balls.
Georgetown opens the 2008 season on Saturday, February 23, hosting Maryland at the Multi-Sport Field. Face-off is slated for noon.
