College Park, Md. - The Georgetown University field hockey team (0-12) could not capitalize on early scoring opportunities, as Towson University (9-5) scored the first six goals, including five in the early portions of the second half to defeat the Hoyas, 6-1 at the Field Hockey Complex in College Park on Wednesday evening.
The Hoyas lone goal came with less than a minute remaining in the match, when senior Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) broke away at midfield and hit a shot into the left side of the Tigers cage.
In the first half the Hoyas captured the early momentum, creating several scoring opportunities inside the Tigers circle, but they were unable to convert any of the chances. Towson would not have the same problem. In the 22nd minute Danielle Wacker tipped in a pass from Mariah Schuette to put the Tigers in front, 1-0.
With no time remaining on the clock in the first half, GU earned back-to-back penalty corners, but Towson goalkeeper Whitney Clugston.stopped one and the second went wide, as the Hoyas went into the half trailing, 1-0.
The Tigers came out strong in the second half scoring two quick goals, both from penalty corners to take a decisive 3-0 lead. In the matches 45th minute Towson's Christina Boarman hit a backhanded shot into the top left corner of the goal to put the Tigers in front, 4-0. Towson would add two more to take a 6-0 lead before Farrand put the Hoyas on the board with just 53 seconds remaining in the match, as the Hoyas fell 6-1.
Georgetown's senior goalkeeper Dee Crovo stopped nine shots in the loss.
Georgetown heads to Villanova to take on the Wildcats on Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. They return home to take on Bucknell at 11 a.m. on Sunday October, 19.
