Field Hockey Falls 4-1 to Lehigh

Sept. 12, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey team (0-6) lost, 4-1, to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (1-3) Friday evening at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md. Despite a solid effort and some chances on offense, the Hoyas couldn't overtake the Mountain Hawks as the squad looks for its first win of the season.

The Mountain Hawks struck first as GU keeper, Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), saved a shot from the top but the ball ricocheted back to Taryn Hartzell who fired it back at the cage and Kelly Fox connected on the deflection to make it 1-0. The Hoyas had their chances near the end of the half with two close shots and a pair of penalty corners but couldn't connect.

"We gained momentum at the end of the first half, unfortunately right before halftime, but then they (Lehigh) came out ready to go in the second," said Head Coach Tiffany Marsh. "That's just experience knowing a team is going to come out like that."

Lehigh came out firing in the second, winning the push-back and taking it down the field to score as Fox got it in from Lindsey Smith. Fox came back and made it a hat trick on the day at the 12-minute mark. The Hoyas had a penalty corner and a solid shot by Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) but the save went to Fox who streaked down the field for the score.

The Hoyas put one in at the ten-minute mark off of a textbook penalty corner. Ashton Hospodar (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) inserted the corner and Kristen Volpe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) took the swing which hit the keeper's pad but bounced into the cage making the score 3-1. Unfortunately, the Mountain Hawks came right back with a goal off of a penalty corner of their own to take the lead back to three, which would be the final.

The Hoyas were outshout 16-13 but took two more penalty corners. Crovo had five saves in the cage for Georgetown.

"With every game, we're so young, we're improving so that's a positive to take away from it," said Marsh.

The Blue & Gray will have a week off before traveling to State College, Pa., next Friday to take on Penn State.
