Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad was selected to finish second in the 2009 BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Poll. The squad received 42 points and had one first place vote in the poll which all eight coaches from the conference participated in. The Hoyas also had three players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul), Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chaffe School) and Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) were all picked to the preseason squad with Kaestner and Trautman as unanimous selections.
The Hoyas finished 2008 12-7 and went 3-2 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown advanced to the conference championship game and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. GU finished the season ranked 10th by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association and had three players earn All-American honors.
Kaestner was a unanimous selection to the preseason squad after earning First Team All-American honors as a sophomore. She was also a First Team All-BIG EAST Selection and an All-Region honoree. Last season, she led the team in goals (52), points (65), draw controls (47) and caused turnovers (33) in the midfield.
Trautman was a Second Team All-American honoree as a junior after leading a powerful Hoya defense. She was also a Regional All-American and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection. Trautman led the Hoyas in ground balls with 45 and ranked second in caused turnovers with 29.
Ford earned Third Team All-American honors as a sophomore while also receiving regional and BIG EAST awards for her play on the attack. She ranked second on the team in points (63), goals (42) and assists (21).
Syracuse earned to top spot in the poll with 49 points, the Orange were ranked second in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine. Notre Dame and Rutgers rounded out the top four with 38 and 29 points, respectively. The Hoyas were ranked seventh in the Lacrosse Magazine preseason poll.
Georgetown will host the BIG EAST Tournament this season at Multi-Sport Field April 24-26. GU opens the season on February 21 at Multi-Sport Field against local-rival George Washington University.
