Storrs, Conn. - The Georgetown women's soccer team lost a spirited contest this afternoon at Connecticut, 2-1. Sara Jordan scored her sixth goal of the season, which tied her for the team lead, off two crisp passes by Ingrid Wells and Kelly D'Ambrisi. However, UConn scored the decider one minute later. The Hoyas fall to (8-3-2, 2-2-1), while the Huskies improve to (9-3-0, 4-1-0).
In the first half, the Hoyas had a couple chances to make the initial mark on the scoreboard. Jordan and Samantha Baker went wide, Wells was denied twice by Husky goalkeeper Jessica Dulski and freshman Mollie Curran was turned away once. The best try on goal saw a header by Camille Trujillo cleared off the goal line by a UConn defender.
Linda Ruutu put UConn on the board with eight minutes remaining in the first half when she chipped the ball over a charging Jackie DesJardin.
In the second half, Trujillo had a chance set-up by Norah Swanson, but was denied in the early stages of the stanza. Caitlin Durkee would skim one just over the bar before having another try saved in the following minutes.
With 15 minutes left, Jordan found a little space in the left top corner of the penalty area and sent a ball toward goal. The shot wiggled through the hands of Dulski and the Hoyas seized the momentum back with the score knotted, 1-1. Wells' assist on the play was her team-leading eighth of the season and D'Ambrisi's helper was her fourth of the season.
Melissa Busque tallied one minute after the Jordan goal with an almost identical chip shot over DesJardin, who was trying to cut down on the shooting angle. Ruutu and Busque are the two goal-scoring leaders for Connecticut.
Trailing 2-1, a Hoya sequence saw shots from Claire Magliola and Swanson get blocked with the second ball falling to D'Ambrisi in the top of the penalty area. The sophomore sent it just over the bar.
In the waning moments of the game, the woodwork was unkind to Georgetown. Jordan hit the post with four minutes remaining and after a Magliola chance was saved, Trujillo hit the post with 16 second left. The play resulted in a throw-in, which led to a corner, but time expired as Baker tried to get the ball in.
For the fourth consecutive game, Georgetown allowed the first goal of the contest and found themselves battling back against a tough Husky squad. In the contest, GU out-shot Connecticut, 18-16 and DesJardin weathered a flurry of tries early and finished the game with six saves.
Georgetown's next game will be Friday, October 9 at 3 p.m. against Louisville. The team will be wearing their customary blue road jerseys for this home game and we ask that fans in attendance please wear blue if possible.
