Georgetown Softball Travels South for UNC-Greensboro Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. - WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (1-8) travels south to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in this weekend's UNC-Greensboro Tournament. While there, the Hoyas will face Robert Morris, Rider, Ohio and host UNC-Greensboro over the course of Saturday and Sunday. For GU, it will be their third tournament in the last three weekends, while Saturday opponents Rider and Robert Morris will open its season this weekend in Greensboro.

The Blue and Gray open their weekend on Saturday morning against Robert Morris at 10 a.m. It marks the first ever meeting between the Hoyas and Colonials. The Colonials finished 15-3 and second place in the Northeastern Conference a year ago and return 10 players from last year's squad. Later on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., Georgetown will take on Rider for the first time in program history. The Broncs finished 12-34 and 4-12, good for a ninth place finish in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference under Tricia Carroll in 2008. The Broncs also return 10 players from last year's squad.

The Hoyas are coming off of a weekend, which saw them go 1-3 at the Panther Invitational at Georgia State. The victory came again Georgia State, as Samantha Peters homered, McKinley Cooper drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning and Jennifer Connell tossed seven strong innings to earn the team's first victory.

Cooper leads the Hoyas offense batting .273 (6-for-22), while freshman Mackensey Carter had made a difference on the mound with a team-leading 1.86 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a .257 average and at the plate, batting .375 (3-for-8).

Sunday 1 p.m. vs. UNC-Greensboro

The Spartans enter this weekend's action batting .273 as a team, with three players hitting over .300. Brittany Ausley leads the squad hitting .383 (18-for-47) with one homer and seven RBI's, while MaryCatherine Vercoe is batting .324 (12-for-37) with two homers and nine RBI's. Hannah Angel leads UNCG's pitching staff at 4-4 with a 2.05 ERA in 54.2 innings.

Sunday 3 p.m. vs. Ohio

In 11 games the Bobcats are hitting an impressive .329 as a team, led by Melissa Bonner's .448 average (13-for-29) and Alexi Zambrana's .400 average (12-for-30). Emily Werthington leads the Bobcats pitching staff at 3-4 with a 4.83 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched.
