WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University Softball team (6-22) fell victim to Longwood's four-run sixth inning a game after using some late-inning heroics of their own to snatch victory away from the Lancers, as a three-run home run from Emily Radford and another Longwood run was enough to defeat the Hoyas, 5-4 in game two of their doubleheader at Guy Mason Field.
Longwood got on the board in the top of the second inning when Amy Betterton doubled to rightfield, driving in Emily Radford to take a 1-0 advantage. The score remained the same, as Mackensey Carter and Brittany Spencer kept the offenses quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning.
With two outs in the fifth inning Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) doubled to right center field to get the Hoyas started. Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) followed with a two-run home run over the left center field fence to put the Hoyas in front, 2-1. Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) followed with a solo shot to left field to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Lancers answered back in the top of the sixth inning, as Emily Radford homered to right centerfield with two runners on, putting Longwood in front 4-3. Longwood would add one more run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5-3.
Carter looked to repeat her late game heroics from game one, leading off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run over the left centerfield fence, bringing the Hoyas within one run, 5-4.
In the top of the seventh with a runner on, Cipriano kept the Lancers from widening their margin with a lunging catch at third base, then threw to first to catch the runner, sending the game into the bottom of the seventh.
Brittany Spencer was able to keep the Hoyas bats under control, striking out two in the final frame to earn the win. Carter took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned on six hits over 7.0 innings.
Georgetown returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on BIG EAST Conference opponent Villanova. The Hoyas and Wildcats are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
