PISCATAWAY, N.J. - PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Georgetown University softball team's (9-24, 3-9 BIG EAST) comeback fell short as Rutgers (13-22, 3-9 BIG EAST) held on to defeat the Hoyas 9-7 in game two of their doubleheader at the RU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) went three-for-three with a home run and three RBI's, while Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) each had two hits in the loss.
The Hoyas got on the board first in the top of the first inning, as Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) singled to drive in Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) to give GU a 1-0 lead.
Rutgers answered quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Brittney Lindley doubled to drive in a run, then scored on Amanda Shaw's single to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Carter put the Hoyas back in front with a three-run home run, giving the Hoyas a 4-1 lead. Rutgers stormed back in the bottom of the third inning, as Kate Valiante drove in a run and Lindley drove in two more to help the Scarlet Knights take a 6-4 lead.
They opened the lead to five runs on Mandy Craig's three-run home run in the fourth inning. Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) singled to drive in a run in the top of the fifth inning. Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) singled to drive in two more runs in the sixth inning, but it was the last offense they were able to produce, falling 9-6.
Carter took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Orange for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
