Sept. 19, 2009

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Ashley Malone (San Jose, Calif./St. Francis) had three of her seven kills and five of her 52 assists to help the Hoyas win the deciding fifth set, 15-7 to defeat NC State 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-7) in their third match of the UNC-Greensboro Tournament. The victory was the Hoyas second over an Atlantic Coast Conference team this season, having defeated Maryland a week ago.

Vanessa Dorismond (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led the Hoyas with 15 kills and five total blocks. Sara Manley (Dove Canyon, Santa Margarita Catholic) had 12 kills and 15 digs and Kortney Robinson (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove) had 11 kills and 15 digs in the victory.

In the first set, the Hoyas jumped out quickly behind two kills from Dorismond to take a 3-0 lead. The Wolfpack would scratch back several times, overcoming three point leads to tie the score at nine and 15. NC State would hold a one point lead as late as 17-16, but kills from Dorismond and Robinson put the Hoyas back in front for good. Manley would convert on an assist from Malone to seal the first set 25-23 for Georgetown. Dorismond hit .500 with six kills to lead the Hoyas.

The second set featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. After trading points through the majority of the second set, the Hoyas caught a break late, as a service error and attack error from the Wolfpack gave GU a 21-19 lead. The Blue and Gray would never trail again, with Robinson and Wise getting kills before Kiersten McKoy (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) had the final kill to give the Hoyas a 25-22 win and a 2-0 advantage.

NC State hit just 0.38 in the third set, but the Hoyas helped them out, hitting .028 giving away 15 points on errors. The Wolfpack jumped out to a 5-0 lead and would never trail, leading by as many as eight points through the set. Kelly Burns would finish off the Hoyas with a service ace to win 25-19.

The Hoyas would once again struggle in the fourth set. After taking a lead at 8-7, NC State would score the next four and lead the rest of the way. Kelly Wood led the Wolfpack with four kills and Lisa Kretchman and Isis Gardner each chipped in three helping to take the set 25-22 and tie the match at two sets apiece.

Malone would help the Hoyas finish strong, serving the Hoyas to a 3-0 lead to start the set. GU would continue to extend the lead, going up 13-3 with McKoy serving the Hoyas on a 5-0 run. Jana Angel tried to give NC State late life with two consecutive service aces, but Robinson would finish off the Wolfpack with a kill to win 15-7 and take the match in five sets.
