Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team continued their stellar play to open the 2009 season with a resounding 4-0 win over James Madison this afternoon on North Kehoe Field. Two goals either side of halftime were backed by another shutout performance from the GU defense.
The Blue & Gray backline of Gabby Miller (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa/Council Rock), Norah Swanson (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) Claire Magliola (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) and goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) set a team record by pushing their opponents' scoreless streak to 360 minutes. Today's match also made it seven-consecutive regular season shutouts for the Hoyas as they improved their record this season to 4-0-0.
"JMU is an explosive team with Julien and Tisinger, but our back four did a great job in holding them," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "Our center backs, Michaela and Gabby, have been outstanding. Michaela is adopting more of a leadership role and Gabby is her silent counterpart in the middle."
Georgetown took advantage of a foul in the penalty area on sophomore Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) for their first goal of the game, a penalty-kick conversion from redshirt sophomore Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair). Wells set-up the second goal on a nifty pass along the left side that was expertly scored by sophomore Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy).
"The two goals in the first half were set up by identical slotted passes from Ingrid," Coach Nolan said. "She moves so fast that it is hard for other teams to single-team and even double-team her defensively. Also, Camille is working so hard out there, a real workhorse that takes hits like the one we saw in the second half and has the ability to score goals. Kelly, she seems so comfortable out there and has the ability to just run past people when given the space. She adds another dimension in the midfield."
Despite the two-goal lead at halftime, the game was evenly played as JMU matched Georgetown opportunity-for-opportunity.
"In the first half, we struggled with their defensive positioning and alignment," Nolan added. "They were playing a box formation in the middle of the field and really making us look to the flanks if we were going to do anything offensively. In the second half, we figured things out and got better looks at goal."
Despite JMU getting a corner-kick chance off the opening to the second half, GU controlled the tempo for the final 45 minutes. Freshman Catherine Cabot (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) scored the third goal in the game off a fortuitous deflection then assisted on the final goal. That fourth tally was scored by sophomore Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) who found the ball amid a scramble in front of the JMU goal and pushed it low to the left side for the final.
"That was a very good win for us today and we knew we were in for a tough time against a talented team like JMU," Nolan sad. "Now we have to prepare ourselves for this Sunday and Santa Clara."
The Hoyas host Santa Clara on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. It is the first game of a Georgetown soccer doubleheader on the Hilltop as the men host nationally-ranked UCLA in the second game. Both games will feature live stats and be available via a webcast at www.GUHoyas.com.
