Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (7-2-1) allowed a first-half goal to Rutgers' leading scorer Ashley Jones and was unable to recover, suffering a 1-0 loss to the No. 17 Scarlet Knights (8-1-1) on Friday.
"It was a disappointing loss," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "We did not play well enough and we can have no complaints with the final result."
The Hoyas, who led the BIG EAST in a number of offensive categories including goals, assists, points and corner-kicks entering the game, were held to a season-low six shots. In fact, the Hoyas have dropped both games this season where they were held under 10 shots for the contest. GU is 3-11-1 all-time against Rutgers and has lost three of four to the Scarlet Knights
Georgetown only had a couple chances in the first half as redshirt sophomore Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) put one high in the 33rd minute and sophomore Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) had a chance go wide in the 37th.
"I thought we came out flat," Nolan said. "We were to slow with our moving and passes and every time Kelly [D'Ambrisi] or Ingrid [Wells] got the ball, they double-teamed them. They needed to recognize those better and their teammates needed to make themselves more available and get into better spots."
Despite giving up an early goal, the GU defense held Rutgers without a goal for the remainder of the game. Overall, the Hoyas were out-shot 10-6 on the afternoon.
"I thought Jackie [DesJardin] was able to make some saves in the second half to keep us in it," Nolan added. "Claire Magliola also did a nice job today as far as connecting offensively and defensively."
The second half was much like the first as Georgetown had trouble breaking down the Rutgers defense and when they were able to find a seam, RU goalkeeper Erin Guthrie nullified their chances. The Hoyas were held to long crosses and difficult passes but still managed to win four corner-kick opportunities and numerous throw-ins in the offensive zone. Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) had the Hoyas best chance of the second half when she trailed a play and cracked a shot that sailed just over goal.
Jones, the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, was the hero for Rutgers and the defense continued their streak of not allowing a first-half goal this season. The Scarlet Knights also showed why they are currently the most difficult team to score on in the conference as Guthrie recorded her sixth shutout of the year.
The Hoyas travel to South Orange, N.J. for a Sunday game at Seton Hall. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
