WASHINGTON - Junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) was one of four Georgetown batters with at least two hits, but it wasn't enough as Davidson scored nine runs in the fifth inning en route to an 11-3 win over the Hoyas in the final game of a three-game series at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.
Georgetown won the series and returns home with a 2-1 overall record, while the Wildcats fall to 1-2.
Junior lefty Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla./Bolles) started and went four-plus innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
Isaacs exited the game after the Wildcats put the first two runners on base in the fifth inning. He was relieved by junior Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit), who threw two-thirds of an inning was charged with six unearned runs as Davidson took advantage of five Georgetown errors and used five hits to score nine runs, taking a 10-0 lead.
Georgetown put runners on base in three of the first five innings, but could not muster any runs off Davidson starter Ryan Overcash, who worked six innings, yielding two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Capeless led a 12-hit attack for the Hoyas, finishing 3-for-4 with three singles. Sophomore right fielder Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two singles, while senior second baseman Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) went 2-for-4 with a double and a single and senior shortstop Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) finished 2-for-4, with two singles, a run scored and one RBI.
