Box Score
QUEENS, N.Y. - Georgetown scored 10 runs in the third inning and opened up a 13-5 lead on St. John's, but the Red Storm came back, scoring five runs in the fifth and three times in the seventh to tie the game before a home run from Matt Wessinger to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning gave SJU the 14-13 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at St. John's. In the nightcap, St. John's scored five runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game en route to a 15-5 win.
The losses drop Georgetown's record to 19-21 overall and 2-12 in the BIG EAST, while St. John's improves to 26-12 and 10-5 in league play. The teams were originally scheduled to play single games Saturday and Sunday, but rescheduled today's games to a doubleheader due to inclement weather expected in the New York City area. The opening game was the second-straight walk-off loss in the series for the Hoyas, who have lost eight league games by one or two runs this season.
In the opener, the Hoyas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run to left-center from junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire). Junior starting pitcher Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles) gave up five runs in the bottom of the inning as SJU took a 5-2 lead, but the Hoyas sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the inning to take a 12-5 lead.
Senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was hit by a pitch and sophomore right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) singled before a double from senior left fielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) brought in a run. Junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) brought in two more runs with a double.
Junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) and Lamont each singled and senior shortstop Tommy Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) walked before Ravnaas hit a triple to right-center, bringing in two more runs. Cupelo followed with a two-run home run to left, closing out the scoring in the inning.
The Hoyas added another run in the fourth when Lamont walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error, making it 13-5.
St. John's scored five runs in the fifth and three more times in the seventh to tie the game at 13-all. Georgetown put runners in scoring position in the eighth and 10th innings, respectively, but could not plate the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the 10th inning, junior Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) gave up a leadoff home run to Wessinger to end the game.
In the nightcap, St. John's took an early 1-0 lead off freshman starter Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade), but the Hoyas took the lead with two runs in the second. Capeless led the inning off with a solo home run to left-center off SJU starter Kyle Hansen and Lamont singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a ground out.
The Red Storm would take a 5-2 lead with a four-run third and a solo home run from Capeless to right-center make it 5-3. The deficit was 6-3 in the fifth when Ravnaas narrowed the gap to one run on a two-run home run from Ravnaas, making it 6-5.
Steinman gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-5, but the Red Storm scored five times in the sixth and seventh innings off relievers Bobby Kirby (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and James Heine (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) to push the lead to 15-5.
Georgetown plays next on Wednesday, April 28 at Virginia.
