WASHINGTON - Mackensey Carter's (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) two run home run was not enough to help her cause on the mound, as USF (23-28, 8-12 BIG EAST) defeated the Georgetown University softball team (17-32, 6-14 BIG EAST) in the first game of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Guy Mason Field on Saturday afternoon.
Carter took the loss, allowing just four runs, though one earned on six hits over 7.0 complete innings. USF's Lindsey Richardson, who ranks among the conferences leaders in earned run average, allowed two runs, one earned on eight hits over 7.0 innings to take the win.
Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Carter went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run to lead the offense.
USF took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Alison Savarese's wind-aided hit fell in for a double in shallow right field, allowing Janine Richardson to cross the plate. The Bulls added two more runs in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a Georgetown error, as Richardson and Tara Toscano came across to put USF in front 3-0.
Carter would strike back in the bottom of the fifth inning, depositing Richardson's pitch over the right centerfield wall for a two-run home run, her fourth of the season. That would be the last offense Georgetown could muster, as they fell 4-2 in game one.
