WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (17-31, ¬6-13 BIG EAST) begins its final series of the season, as they host BIG EAST Conference opponent USF (22-28, 7-12 BIG EAST) for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Guy Mason Field. The Hoyas and Bulls will conclude its series and the season on Sunday at 11 a.m. when the Hoyas will celebrate Senior Day.
Georgetown is 0-2 against the Bulls, with both games coming during the 2009 season. The Hoyas enter its series with USF having lost its last four conference matchups, including being swept by DePaul last weekend. The Hoyas last BIG EAST win came against Rutgers on April, 28, when sophomore RHP Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) tossed 7.0 innings of two-hit shut out ball to earn the victory. Carter has had an impact on the mound and at the plate this season for Georgetown. Carter is tied for the team-lead with seven wins and carries a 2.83 earned run average, the best on the squad and 14th best in the conference. Her .351 (53-for-151) batting average is the ninth best in the conference.
The Hoyas have also received a strong offensive season from senior 3B Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter). Cipriano is 16th in the BIG EAST with a .341 (45-for-132) average.
Cipriano along with Suria Bahadue, Jennifer Connell, Jadig Garcia and Samantha Peters, members of the first recruiting class in program history will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday with a pre-game ceremony scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. Kelsie Hanson, a team captain, who transferred to Georgetown following her sophomore season, and who has started at second base in every game during her two seasons will also be honored.
USF comes into the weekend season-finale having lost eight of its last 10 games, though the Bulls two victories come against Louisville and Pittsburgh. JoJo Medina is tenth in the BIG EAST in hitting, at .348 (39-for-112) and fourth in the conference with an on base percentage of .486. Alison Savarese has added power to the lineup, leading the squad with seven home runs and 38 RBI's.
Lindsey Richardson has led the pitching staff, going 11-7 and carrying a 1.99 ERA, good for fifth best in the conference.
