WASHINGTON - The 19th-ranked Georgetown University women's soccer team gave up a goal midway through the first half, but could not score the equalizer en route to a 1-0 loss to Rutgers on Friday evening at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
It was the third-straight loss for the Hoyas, who fall to 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play. Rutgers improves to 6-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
"It was a heart-breaking loss," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "The girls played really well tonight and deserved better. We created many chances and right now, they are just not going in. "We have to keep doing what we do and it will break for us. This streak has been hard because we have played very well and I am confident we will get some breaks."
Rutgers jumped on top midway through the first half, taking advantage of a corner kick. After the corner from Gina DeMaio bounced out, Shannon Woller sent a pass to Ashley Medcalf. Medcalf's shot hit the cross bar and bounced in past senior goalie Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) at the 23:28 mark.
Early in the first half, Georgetown had its best chance in the 12th minute when a header from junior forward Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) was blocked and the follow-up shot from junior midfielder Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) was saved by Rutgers goalie Samantha Perretty.
The Hoyas had a pair of chances in the final 10 minutes of the first half, including a shot from Wells that was saved With less than four minutes left, freshman Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) sent a shot wide after a corner kick from senior Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park).
Georgetown took six corner kicks in the second half, but could not score the tying goal.
Rutgers out-shot Georgetown, 10-6, but both teams had three shots on goal apiece. The Hoyas were aggressive in the second half, but could not put opportunities away. Georgetown finished the game with an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks, including six coming in the second half.
The Hoyas have little time to rest as the team will have one day off before returning back to action. Georgetown hosts BIG EAST Conference rival Seton Hall (6-3-0, 2-0-0) on Sunday, Sept. 26. Kickoff in the conference home opener at North Kehoe Field is slated for 1 p.m.
