WASHINGTON - The No. 13 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-4) will travel to New Jersey to take on the Princeton University Tigers in a Sunday afternoon matchup at Class of 1952 Stadium. This is the fifth ranked opponent of the season to face the Hoyas. The game will be televised tape delayed on Verizon FiOS and the opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Hoyas handily defeated Villanova, 17-12, on Friday under the lights at Multi-Sport Field in the BIG EAST opener. Sophomore Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) and senior Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) both managed four goals apiece and sophomore Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied two goals and as many assists.
Georgetown opened the game with a goal by senior captain Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School). The Wildcats tied it up, but that would be as close as they would come as the Hoyas staged an 11-1 run over 20 minutes. The Blue & Gray dominated possession hitting on three free position shots and tallying four unassisted scores. Throughout the second half, the staff began to mix up the lineup giving players opportunities for minutes. The changes allowed the Wildcats to get back in the game, but the squad was never within striking distance. At the final horn, the Hoyas had the 17-12 victory.
Georgetown's offense is led by Kirr, who has 18 points on nine goals and nine assists this season. Thomas has 13 goals on the season and two assists to rank second in points. Bozel leads the team in draw controls with 17, while Thomas and junior Kelly Barnes (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) rank in ground balls with 13 and 11, respectively.
Princeton is 3-3 this season and 2-0 at home. The Tigers fell to No. 8 Virginia, 10-9, last week. Jaci Gassaway leads the team with 17 points on nine goals and eight assists, while Lizzy Drumm has 14 points on one assist and a squad-best 13 goals. In the loss to Virginia, Barb Previ had three goals, while Sarah Lloyd added two.
Georgetown is 6-10 all-time against the Tigers, with the last win coming in 2008 at home. Last year, the Hoyas lost at Multi-Sport Field, 15-14, in triple overtime. The Blue & Gray is 1-7 all-time against the Tigers on the road.
The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Class of 1952 Stadium. A live feed and live stats will be at www.goprincetontigers.com. The game will be televised tape delayed locally on Verizon FiOS.
