BETHESDA, Md. - In the first game, sophomore pitcher Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) gave up a leadoff off home run in the first to Zach Duggan and then walked the next three batters and two more runs came in to give Pitt a 3-0 lead. The Hoyas, however, came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Leeson reached on a single and moved to third on a single from sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) before a double from Fernandez scored one run. Lamont was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Capeless reached on an error, scoring two runs and tying the game. Junior Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill) reached on an error to score a run and give the Hoyas a 4-3 lead. The Hoyas had the bases loaded with one out after a walk to sophomore left fielder Paul Bello (Towaca, N.J./Delbarton) but did not get any more runs across.
Pittsburgh tied the game at 4-all on a solo home run from Kevan Smith in the third and then took the lead for good with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Travis Whitmore and a solo home run from Rick Devereaux. The Hoyas got back on board with three runs in the seventh to make it 12-7. Garza walked and went to third on a single from Fernandez, with a throwing error bring him across. Lamont followed with a two-run home run to left, cutting the deficit to five run. The Panthers, however, score three times in the ninth to make it 15-7.
Steinman took the loss for the Hoyas, falling to 1-4 this season as he threw 3.0 innings, giving up four earned runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Freshman reliever Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) threw two-thirds of an inning and gave up six runs (two of them earned) on five hits with one walk. Junior Billy Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass./Moses Brown) threw 2.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits while junior Bobby Kirby (Bell Air, Md./Loyola Blake field) went 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Fernandez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, single, three runs scored and one RBI, while Lamont was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs and two RBI.
