WASHINGTON - Three Georgetown relievers threw four scoreless innings, but it wasn't enough as Navy scored four runs in the third inning to break a 1-all tie and the Midshipmen went on to beat Georgetown, 9-2, at Max Bishop Field in Annapolis, Md. Wednesday afternoon.
It was the third loss in the last four games for the Hoyas, who fall to 18-13 overall, while the Midshipmen improve to 18-11-1.
Senior reliever Mike Seander (Cranston, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) threw a scoreless fifth inning, with one walk and one strikeout, while senior Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) threw two innings and gave up no runs on two hits with one strikeout, while sophomore James Heine (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth inning.
Navy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but Georgetown rallied to tie the game in the third. Senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) reached second base on an error with one out and scored on a single through the left side from senior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire).
Sophomore pitcher Bobby Kirby (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) started and took the loss for Georgetown, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Lamont finished the day with two hits while shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) went 2-for-3, with two singles and a walk.
Georgetown hits the road on Thursday for a three-game series at West Virginia, beginning on Friday, April 8. First pitch at WVU Stadium is slated for 7:05 p.m.
