WASHINGTON - The No. 23 Georgetown University women's soccer squad (1-0) will host the American University Eagles (1-0) on Sunday in the team's home opener at North Kehoe Field at 1 p.m. The Hoyas are currently 1-0 on the season after defeating George Washington University, 3-0, on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore defender Kailey Blain (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) scored two goals in the season opener scoring the game winner just 30 second into the contest. Senior midfielder Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) added a penalty kick in the second half making the final 3-0. In goal, junior Hanna Monson had three saves and the shutout for the Blue & Gray.
The Hoyas are ranked No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll and No. 15 in the TopDrawerSocer.com preseason national rankings. The Hoyas were picked to finish in second place of the National Division in the BIG EAST Conference last week when the league's preseason poll was announced. The second place selection, including one first place vote, was the highest ever in a league preseason poll for the Hoyas.
American used a goal in the 80th minute to get the 2-1 victory over UMBC on Friday evening. Junior Carleigh Morba and sophomore Shaena Alfonsi each recorded goals as the Eagles won their first season opener since the 2007 season.
American is looking to get off to a strong start this season on the heels of a 6-2-3 finish in its final 11 matches last year. The Eagles return eight starters from last year's team and also welcome eight newcomers to the mix.
The matchup with American will be the 16th meeting all-time between the schools, with Georgetown holding an 11-4-0 advantage. The Hoyas have won the last six games between the teams, including a 9-0 decision at American last season. Georgetown has a 6-1 all-time record in home games against the Eagles including one double overtime victory from the 1997 season.
Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., at North Kehoe Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
