WASHINGTON - Senior defender Kelly Barnes (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll Monday after leading the Hoyas to a 2-0 week including a mark of 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play. This is Barnes' and No. 18/17 Georgetown's first weekly award so far this season which started last Wednesday.
Barnes anchored a defense that averaged 6.5 goals-allowed last week, along with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. She notched an assist in GU's season-opening 16-7 victory over Delaware on Wednesday along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. In the win at Villanova on Saturday, Barnes managed three ground balls and two caused turnovers as the Hoyas cruised to the 18-6 decision.
Barnes is leading the Blue & Gray in ground balls with eight and is tied for first in caused turnovers with six. This is the two-year captain's first weekly honor from the BIG EAST.
The defender has already received Preseason All-America and All-BIG EAST honors. She earned her second-consecutive spot on the All-BIG EAST team with a nod to the Second Team at the conference banquet in 2011.
Georgetown will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad begins a tough stretch with six ranked opponents in the next six games. The stretch starts with the No. 4/5 University of Florida Gators at Multi-Sport Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
