WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (15-20, 0-3 BIG EAST) downed the UMBC Retrievers (17-16) in Baltimore, Md. by a score of 8-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led off with a single in the first, and
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) brought Hyson home with a double to make the score 1-0. The Hoyas tallied two more runs in the second after
Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) hit a homerun with
Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) on second.
The Blue & Gray kept the momentum going in the third, with
Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) hitting a single up the middle to bring Anttila home to score.
Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) had a base hit to load the bases in the top of the fourth. Carter was walked for the unearned run giving Georgetown the 6-0 lead.
Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) hit a solo home run to lead off in the seventh.
The last time the Hoyas had two home runs in a game was against Lehigh on February 26. Georgetown recorded nine hits in the game, its highest hit total since a contest against Toledo on February 28.
Megan Hyson led the defensive effort for the Hoyas with 13 strikeouts in 23 at bats. The freshman pitched seven innings without walking a batter.
The Hoyas return to the Hilltop for a three-game series against BIG EAST rival DePaul (18-11, 2-1 BIG EAST) beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
