WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (15-23, 0-6 BIG EAST) fell 8-1 in the last game of a home series against DePaul (21-12, 5-1 BIG EAST). The Hoyas got on the board first, but couldn't hold on to the early lead with a six-run push from the Blue Demons in the fifth inning.
The Hoyas got going in the second with a double from
Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill/Antioch Community) to send
Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) sprinting around from second to score, giving Georgetown the early 1-0 lead.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) recorded three hits through the first four innings, holding DePaul to just one run.
With four innings gone, Kirsten Verdun had thrown six strikeouts against Georgetown batters. The Blue Demons exploded in the fifth inning for six runs off three DePaul hits including one home run. Two fielding errors by the Hoyas brought three runners around to score.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took the mound in the middle of the fifth. The Blue Demons hit a two-run shot to bring in two more runs, making the score 7-1 DePaul.
The Blue Demons kept up their offensive momentum with a solo home run to left field in the seventh. DePaul tallied five hits for seven runs in the final three innings.
The Hoyas went six-for-26 as a team with Anttila and Carter both going two-for-two.
Georgetown University softball continues its conference schedule against Pitt with a doubleheader in Pittsburgh, Pa., beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11.
