Hoya Baseball Players Competing in Summer Leagues

June 20, 2013

WASHINGTON - While many Georgetown students are interning with various companies or spending time on vacations this summer, Hoya baseball players have continued to play in summer wood-bat leagues throughout the country.

Rising senior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) is back for his second season with the Newport (R.I.) Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). Anderson, who helped the Gulls win the NECBL last year along the way to a No. 1 ranking as the best summer league team in the country, is playing first base and has started every game for the team.

Anderson is among a handful of Hoyas playing in the NECBL. Rising senior right fielder Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebastian's) and rising sophomore shortstop Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) are both playing for the New Bedford (Mass.) Bay Sox. Venditti has hit two doubles and driven in two runs while playing in six games and Pomeroy has played in three games.

Matt Smith (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), a rising sophomore starting pitcher, has been in the rotation for the Plymouth (Mass.) Pilgrims, who are 2-6 this season. Smith has one of the team's wins, and carries a 1-0 record with a 3.00 earned run average. He posted his first win this past Sunday, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts as the Pilgrims beat New Bedford.

Rising juniors Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) are teammates for the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swamp Dogs, who play in the Coastal Plains League. Hollenbeck has made one relief appearance for the SwampDogs, throwing a scoreless inning. Busch had three doubles in his first four games, but has been sidelined with an injury in the last two weeks.

Three Hoyas are playing for the teams locally in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League, with rising sophomore Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison) playing for the Vienna (Va.) RiverDogs and classmates Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) and Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier) playing for the Alexandria (Va.) Aces.

Davis has made two appearances, including one start, for the RiverDogs, who are 4-4 this season. He has thrown 5.1 innings, yielding two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. The Aces, also 4-4, have had Collins behind the plate in all eight games and he is batting .267 with three doubles and seven RBI, while Chudacoff has made two relief appearances for the team.

Relief pitcher Gino Basso (Glen Allen, Va./Godwin), a rising sophomore, is on the roster for the Sag Harbor (N.Y.) Whalers in the Hamptons League. Basso has made three appearances for the Whalers, who are 6-8 this season.
