WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer squad (10-3-4, 5-1-2 BIG EAST) tied the Villanova University Wildcats (5-8-4, 3-3-2 BIG EAST), 1-1, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Sunday at Shaw Field. The Hoyas have one regular-season game remaining and celebrated members of the senior class following the game.
The Hoyas dominated possession in the first half with five early corner kicks and dangerous looks off headers. Freshman defender Drew Topor (Madison, N.J./Pingry) was incredibly active on setpieces, but couldn't shoot on target.
The Hoyas had a great look in the 20th minute as senior midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) slipped the ball past the defense and found senior forward Jessica Clinton (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) who forced VU keeper Emma Mayer to make a big save to keep it scoreless on a ball from the left side.
The Wildcats had a chance with five minutes left in the first, but junior midfielder Marina Paul (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Laguna Beach) cleared it out for a harmless corner. In the final minute, Villanova looked the best the team had on offense, however, the Hoya defense stood strong to go into the break in a scoreless tie.
The Hoyas began the second looking sharp with back-to-back corner kicks. Daphne Corboz had the defense beat and popped it to senior forward Audra Ayotte (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) for a wide open header that went high.
Ayotte had another chance in the 56th minute dribbling across the field and shooting to the upper corner that went just over the crossbar.
After 12 corner kicks, the 13th proved to be the key for the Blue & Gray in the 64th minute. Freshman midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) sent the ball in to the far post for an awaiting Taylor Pak (Wellington, Fla./American Heritage). The freshman tapped it back to the middle to classmate Topor who buried it through the scramble in front of the net to make it 1-0.
The goal was the first of Topor's career on the Hilltop.
With 18:30 left in regulation, a shot by Hayley Wilson was handled in the box and referee Shaun Papperman had no hesitation in calling the penalty kick. Emily Damstrom lined up and buried it to tie in in the 72nd minute.
The Hoyas pressed late in the half, but couldn't find the answer to send it into overtime tied at one.
Despite one Wildcat corner kick, the Blue & Gray dominated the first overtime with a number of looks at the net, but nothing on target.
This forced the final 10 minutes of play where Nova had a good chance midway through. Senior goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) came way off her line to clear a ball with Wildcats pressuring. Newins sent it back, but it went to the foot of Caitlin Forte who fired it back in forcing Newins to make the save on her heels.
The Hoyas answered with a chance of their own as a low cross went to Pak whose shot was blocked. The rebound went to Ayotte and had a chance blocked. Finally, Daphne Corboz ripped one from outside the box that went wide. That would be the last chance as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Georgetown outshot Villanova, 20-3, and took 17 corner kicks to the Wildcats' two. Newins had one save in the net, while Meyer managed three.
Sunday marked Georgetown's final regular season home game of the 2014 campaign as the team celebrated the eight seniors.
The Hoyas will be back in action at Seton Hall University on Friday in the season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at the Pirates' athletic website.
