Georgetown Drops BIG EAST Matchup against Old Dominion

Oct. 31, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey (5-12, 0-5 BIG EAST) team dropped its last BIG EAST conference matchup of the season on Friday afternoon when it fell, 3-0, to No. 17 Old Dominion (11-6, 4-1 BIG EAST) on Multi-Sport Field.

GU was able to hold off the Old Dominion attack and held the Lady Monarchs to three shots through 15 minutes of play in the game. Georgetown was unable to stop the first goal, however, as Sarah Breen shot the ball past Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) in a one-touch possession following the insertion of a penalty corner by Nicole Goff at 15:11.

Georgetown drove the ball down field following the first goal and was close to finding the back of the net, but the shot by Molly Denzel (Sunnyvale, Calif./St. Francis) went just wide, preventing the Hoyas from getting on the board.

Skonecki went on to make five saves during the rest of the first half of action to keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.

The Hoyas kept pace with the Old Dominion offense through the first six minutes of the second half before a foul in the circle led to a penalty corner for the Lady Monarchs. Breen scored her second of the game following the insertion by Emily Harting.

Following the second goal, the Blue & Gray allowed only one shot over 16 minutes, before a penalty corner led to the third goal of the game. Skonecki was unable to prevent the ball from floating over her head to find the net. The goal made the score 3-0, a mark that would remain until the end of the game.

The sophomore goalie made three more saves in the second half to bring her game total to 10. On the season, Skonecki has amassed 107 saves in cage.

Up next for the Hoyas is a meeting with the Towson Tigers on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field. The game will mark the conclusion of regular season play and also serve as Senior Day. Four seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the game.
