Nov. 25, 2014 WASHINGTON - Freshman Terese Cannon (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) of the Georgetown volleyball team has been selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The postseason all-conference teams are chosen by a vote of the league's head coaches.
"Terese has worked very hard, staying after practice to get extra reps, and improved over the course of the season," Georgetown Head Coach Arlisa Williams said. "Her hard work paid off and I am thrilled that she was recognized for her efforts and contributions this season."
Cannon had a sensational start to her career on the Hilltop, finishing with 319 kills and 3.04 kills per set on 994 total attacks, all team highs. She was third on the team with 54 total blocks and also contributed 110 digs, 11 assists and six service aces. Cannon ranked 10th in the entire BIG EAST in both kills per set and points per set (3.38) and was the only freshman in the conference in the top 20 in both categories. In BIG EAST matches, Cannon was even more impressive, averaging 3.15 kills per set and .44 blocks per set. She played in all 31 matches and 105 of Georgetown's 107 sets this season, registering double figures in kills 15 times. On October 24, in a thrilling 3-2 victory over DePaul at McDonough Arena, Cannon finished with 29 kills, a season high for the Hoyas and the highest total by any Georgetown player in over five years.
"I'm honored to make the BIG EAST second team," Cannon said. "There is no way I could have done it without my teammates and coaches. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such awesome girls who really made this a great season."
This is the third-consecutive season that a Hoya has been named to the second team. Senior Dani White (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) received the honor each of the past two years as a sophomore and junior.
Georgetown concluded its 2014 season on Sunday with a 3-0 sweep of Villanova on Senior Day. The Blue & Gray finished with a 10-21 overall record and a 4-14 mark in BIG EAST play.
