April 12, 2014

Final Stats

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton Bluejays swept Georgetown in Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 13-4 and 16-5. The games were played at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, the home of the College World Series.

The losses dropped Georgetown's record to 12-20 overall and 0-6 in the BIG EAST. Creighton improved to 18-11-1 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST.

Game One ...

Creighton scored 10 runs over its final four at-bats to pull away for a 13-4 win.

AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) was on base four times, going 3-for-3 with a walk and driving in a run. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) and Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) were each 2-for-4 and scored two runs.

Creighton jumped on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first. After a pair of singles, a two-out double into the left-field corner scored both the runners.

The Bluejays added a run in the second inning on a leadoff double, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 3-0.

Georgetown scored its first run of the weekend in the fourth inning. Collins led off with a double to the wall in right field, the Hoyas first hit of the day. A ground out by Anderson moved him to third and he scored on a single up the middle by Carter.

Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) singled in Anderson, who had doubled, in the top of the sixth.

The Hoyas strung together four-straight singles to start the eighth with the fourth, by Camporini, driving in Collins. Ryan bounced into a fielder's choice, scoring Anderson to provide Georgetown's fourth run.

Creighton plated four runs in the fifth and eighth innings as well as two in the seventh to put the game away.

Game Two ...

The Bluejays used a seven-run sixth inning to break open a 6-5 game, en route to a 16-5 victory.

Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, increasing his season average to a team-high .345. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) and Anderson each had two hits and drove in two runs while Collins also had a pair of hits. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) was on base three times - via a hit, walk and hit-by-pitch - and scored twice.

After Creighton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, the Hoyas' were able to close within one with a three-run third inning. Webber led off and was hit by a pitch. One out later, Busch singled to put runners at first and second. With the runners going, Hall singled through a vacated hole at third to score Webber. Collins singled to load the bases and Anderson followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Trailing 6-3 in the sixth, Webber again got on base to lead things off, this time with a walk. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) sacrificed him to second and he scored on a double by Busch down the left field line. Hall followed with a single to left to push Busch across the plate to cut the score to 6-5.

Creighton scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an inside-the-park grand slam, and three more in the seventh, on a three-run home run, to put the game away.

The Hoyas return home to Shirley Povich Field for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday against George Mason. Georgetown will then host Seton Hall in a three-game series on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All three games will start at 1 p.m.

Notes - Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) singled in both games in the doubleheader and has now reached base safely in 16-consecutive games.
