WASHINGTON - Senior midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) scored a goal and an assist and Georgetown scored two first half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Duquesne at Shaw Field on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon.

Georgetown improved to 5-2-2 with its second-straight win, while Duquesne falls to 3-3-2.

"Overall I'm disappointed because we talked about coming out fast on them and we did," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "We knew they were going to come here and sit in against us, and try to counter-attack, and we knew if we could get an early game, it would encourage them to come out and open the game a bit.

"At 1-0, they never came out and at 2-0 they never really came out. It was only in the second half that they got a bit braver. That was the disappointing thing, that when it did open up, we didn't take advantage of the space that was there for us."

The three points for Corboz give her 108 for her career, tying Ingrid Wells (C'11) for the all-time lead in scoring on the Hilltop. Corboz, who has five goals and six assists for 16 points this season, is the school's all-time leader in goals scored (40) and ranks third all-time in assists (28).

Senior forward Vanessa Skrumbis (Encino, Calif./Sierra Canyon) scored Georgetown's second goal while freshman Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) and junior Marina Paul (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Laguna Beach) each had assists.

The Hoyas took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a Corboz-to-Corboz combination, with the younger sister, Rachel, feeding the elder sister, Daphne. In the 10th minute, Rachel Corboz sent a ball from the far end line to left edge of the box, where Daphne blasted a shot to the near post from about seven yards out, giving the Blue & Gray a 1-0 lead.

The lead increased to 2-0 in the 22nd minute off a corner kick from Corboz. Sent to the far post, Paul headed the ball toward the goal line and Skrumbis was able to knock it past Tabata at 21:21 for her eighth goal of the season.

The Hoyas had maintained possession in the opening minutes of the game, with the team's first solid chance coming in the seventh minute when Rachel Corboz sent a ball from the end line into the box where a header from sophomore Emily Morgan (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) went just wide.

Duquesne's best chance of the first half came in the 33rd minute off a corner kick from Haley Yow, who sent the ball to the middle of the box. Maddie Layman headed the ball with pace and it cleared a Hoya defender but junior goalkeeper Lauren Trower (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), making her first collegiate start, made a diving stop for the save.

Georgetown continued to maintain possession as the second half began and the Hoyas had their best chance in the 59th minute when Daphne Corboz received a ball from senior midfielder Ashley Shaffer (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) on the near side. Corboz dribbled through traffic and into the box and took a shot from 15 yards out that Tabata made a diving stop to her left, narrowly stopping the ball with her left hand. With just three minutes left, senior Audra Ayotte (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) played a ball from the far side into the box for Skrumbis, who was covered by two Dukes players. She was able to maintain possession and took a shot as Tabata came off her line, but a Duquesne defender cleared the ball off.

Duquesne's best chance in the second half came on a shot from Cydney Staton, who collected the ball on the near side and blasted a shot that Trower made a diving stop for on the near post. The ball bounced off and hit the crossbar before Trower was able to clear it off the line.

Georgetown out-shot Duquesne, 18-5, and the Hoyas had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Georgetown hits the road for the start of BIG EAST Conference action, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 25, when the team plays at DePaul. Kickoff in Chicago is slated for 3 p.m.
