Georgetown Heads to Penn Invitational

WASINGTON - The Georgetown men's tennis team has experience on its side as it readies to play at the PENN Invitational this weekend from Sept. 26-28. The men have played two events thus far, the first being on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against UDC and the second being the Georgetown Classic on Friday, Sept. 19.

The men played the Firebirds at the UDC Tennis Facility and emerged victorious, 9-0, after sweeping both singles and doubles play.

In the top position, Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) defeated Alexis Baguelin 6-3, 7-5 and teammate Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) played at the No. 3 slot and came back to defeat Simon Andersson 7-6, 10-6 after dropping the first set 6-4.

Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), in the No. 5 spot, and Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar), playing in the No. 6 spot, both took down their opponents 6-1, 6-1. Murphy dropped Marco Feligioni and Korber defeated Diego Pinto.

Freshmen newcomers Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) and Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) both emerged victorious in their first action as Hoyas. Lam defeated Rok Bozic 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot, and Beatty won 6-1, 6-0 over Ander Murillo in the No. 4 slot.

In doubles play, Tropiano and Beatty defeated Andersson and Baguelin 8-2 in the top position. Khanin and Lam took down Bozic and Feligioni 8-3 at the No. 2 spot, while Korber and Murphy were victorious over Murillo and Pinto 8-3 in the No. 3 slot.

Georgetown Classic

The Blue & Gray then took on members of both the George Washington and Morgan State squads at the Georgetown Classic on Friday, Sept. 19 at the GW Tennis Center at the Mount Vernon Campus.

In singles competition, Murphy and Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) were both victorious over their opponents from Morgan State. Murphy defeated Kevin Ward 6-2, 6-1 while Portner downed Treajh Ferguson 6-2, 6-4.

Lam and Beatty were also victorious as they took down two George Washington foes. Lam beat Chris Hadjigeorgiou 6-4, 6-3 and Beatty defeated Jabari Stafford 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles play, the Blue & Gray went 3-0.

The duo of Tropiano and Beatty defeated Duk Young-Park and Ward of Morgan State 8-1 while Khanin and Lam were victorious, 8-6, over Stafford and Hadjigeorgiou of GW. Korber and Portner provided the third win for GU after taking down Chris Fletcher and Darian Hashemzadeh of George Washington 8-5.
