Jan. 27, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Conference by the league's coaches in the 2015 preseason poll released Tuesday. Additionally, senior Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year and three Hoyas were selected as a part of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team with Devine and senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) as unanimous selections.
Devine was a Second Team All-Region performer for the Hoyas last season and the winner of the team's Star Award and Bulldog Award. The Star Award is given to the player to earn the most stars throughout the season. Stars were given following each game by meeting statistical goals. The Bulldog Award is given to a player who displayed outstanding effort and contributions to the squad, Devine won it for the second-consecutive season.
She was a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree and unanimous selection after starting in all 20 games. She had two goals for the year and led the squad in caused turnovers and ground balls with 39 and 33, respectively. Devine was third in draw controls pulling in 41. The defender earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in April marking her second-career weekly award.
She is among the all-time career leaders in caused turnovers with 65. Devine is also fourth on GU's season listing with 39 caused turnovers in 2014. Already this season, Devine was selected as a 2015 team captain.
This is her second Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.
Tarzian was named Second Team All-Region as a junior for the second time in her career. In 2014, she earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors for the second-consecutive year, marking her third-consecutive All-BIG EAST award. Tarzian led the squad in scoring after starting all 20 contests with 29 goals and a team-best 18 assists for 37 points. She earned two nods to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll last year.
Tarzian is among the all-time career leaders in goals (99), assists (41) and points (140). In her career she has been a IWLCA Third Team All-American and a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. Already this season, Tarzian was selected as a 2015 team captain.
This is her second unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection.
Etchison earned her first conference preseason honor after being named Second Team All-BIG EAST a season ago. Etchison was third on the squad in scoring with 27 goals and 15 assists for 42 points on the year. She appeared in all 20 games for the Blue & Gray and had 18 ground balls to her credit. Etchison was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll once last season.
Georgetown earned 42 points from the league's eight head coaches to sit second behind newcomer the University of Florida with 49 points and seven first-place votes. The University of Connecticut was selected third with 36 points and one first-place vote, while other newcomer Vanderbilt University with 39 points rounded out the top four. Temple (24) and Villanova (21) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Marquette and Cincinnati were in the final spots with 12 and eight points.
Georgetown completed the 2014 season with a record of 11-9 and its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. The Hoyas advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and also appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game.
Georgetown will start off 2015 against the University of Delaware Blue Hens on Feb. 14 in Newark, Del. The opening draw is at 1 p.m.
