WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team had a busy weekend as the Blue & Gray opened its fall schedule on Sunday against the Ontario Blue Jays. On Saturday, the Hoyas hosted approximately 25 alums of the baseball program for a lunch and alumni game at Shirley Povich Field.

Sunday
On Sunday, the Hoyas played host to the Ontario Blue Jays, an elite high school baseball team from Canada. In a 12-inning exhibition meant to provide valuable playing time to the younger players, the Hoyas came away with a resounding 13-0 victory in a 12-inning exhibition at Shirley Povich Field.

Junior Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started on the mound for the Blue & Gray and went three shutout innings, allowing just a pair of singles while striking out two. Sophomore right-hander Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School) followed and went three scoreless innings of his own, registering two strikeouts. Redshirt senior Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) took the mound for the first time in almost two seasons and went 1.1 hitless innings with a strikeout before senior Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) picked up three strikeouts without surrendering a hit in 1.2 innings of work.

Freshmen Anthony Morabito (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College HS), Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) and Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) worked the final 3.1 innings, giving up just two hits while striking out five and not allowing a walk. Morabito struck out three of the four batters he faced.

Offensively, the Hoyas had several standouts as six different players had multi-hit games. Sophomore Bennett Stehr (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) highlighted the offense with a home run, double and three RBI while freshman Christian Sanchez (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka Community) finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Senior Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) had two hits and two RBI while junior Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) had two hits, an RBI and a run scored and senior Joe Sleiman (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) contributed a double and a single. Sophomore Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) had a single and was hit by a pitch three times to reach base all four plate appearances.

Georgetown jumped on the board with six runs in the first inning. Two runners -- Hall and Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) -- came around to score on an error. Dillon then drove in Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) with a double before Sanchez singled in Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) and Dillon. Hall ripped his second single of the inning to score Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) and cap the scoring.

Stehr smashed a double down the left field line in the second inning to score Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton).

Three runs scored in the sixth inning, all on wild pitches, before Stehr hit a majestic home run, a two-run shot, over the scoreboard in left-center field in the seventh inning.

Sanchez, Joe Amato (Essex Fells, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy), and Dillon drove in runs in the final innings to complete the scoring.

Alumni Game
Former Hoyas gathered at Shirley Povich Field on Saturday for the annual alumni game, coinciding with Georgetown's Homecoming Weekend. A group of about 25 alums ate lunch at the park with the current members of the team before taking batting practice, thrown by Georgetown Head Coach Pete Wilk, and playing a seven-inning game.

Several Hoyas sent home runs the fence during practice, highlighted by shots from Justin Leeson (`13), Ryan Craft (`06), Steve Anderson (`14) and Cary Piligian (`10). Piligian was a pitcher during his Georgetown career and is tied for ninth in the record books with 66 career appearances.

Following batting practice, the alums were split into two teams by Leeson and Anderson and a seven-inning contest ensued.

Rob Begin ('09) and Eddie Pena (`05) both started on the mound and went three innings. Tom Polus ('12), Paul Bello (`13), and Parker Brooks ('05) and Jim Supple (`05) also made pitching appearances.

Mark Siegel (1989), co-chair of the Hoya Diamond Club, had three hits on the day and made a nice running catch in left field. Brooks had a triple and made several terrific defensive plays behind the plate and at shortstop. Matt Carullo (`'03) hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, and Supple also added a couple of hits and scored the first run of the day on a single from Scott Elliott (`87).

The defensive play of the game came on a 3-6-1 double play turned by the trio of Anderson, Tom Elliott ('10) and Pena. Jason Martinez ('91) was also a defensive stalwart, making some great plays in right field as well as third base.
