Feb. 27, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (0-1) will host the No. 11/11 Princeton University Tigers (2-0) in the team's home opener on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field in a 3 p.m. matchup. The Hoyas have had two weeks since their season-opening contest at the University of Delaware.
The Blue & Gray fell, 17-5, at Delaware on Feb.14. The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the first minute, and Georgetown never had an opportunity to recover to drop the first game of the year.
Five different players scored for the Hoyas with sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) tallying a goal and an assist. Georgetown was outshot, 30-14, and pulled in 11 draw controls to Delaware's 12. The difference was in giveaways as GU committed 19 turnovers and the Blue Hens just 10.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage with three saves in 24:45 minutes played, junior Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) played 35:15 minutes and managed five stops in the contest.
The Tigers are 2-0 on the season after a 10-8 win over then-ranked No. 9 Loyola before an 8-4 victory over Drexel on Wednesday night.
The senior duo of Erin Slifer and Erin McMunn lead the team in scoring. Slifer has six goals and two assists for eight points, while McMunn has three goals and three assists. Sophomore Olivia Hompe adds six points as well with four tallies and two helpers. Junior Stephanie Paloscio has chipped in two goals, while freshman Hayley Giraldi and junior Anya Gersoff have a goal and an assist each.
Sophomore Ellie DeGarmo got the start against Drexel after coming in for the save against Loyola. In two games she has a .737 save percentage and a 3.86 goals against average. Senior Annie Woehling started against Loyola and made three saves on 10 shots in the first 42 minutes.
The Hoyas are 7-12 all-time against the Tigers and have won the last two meetings. GU is 6-2 against Princeton winning the last contest at Multi-Sport Field, 11-6, during the 2013 season.
Last year, Georgetown won, 17-16, in overtime in New Jersey. Tarzian scored the game winner to give the Blue & Gray the victory. Meghan Farrell and Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) both had hat tricks, while Hannah Franklin, Natalie Miller (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) and Kelyn Freedman both tallied two goals and one assist for the game. Reilly Woodman had five draw controls and a goal in the contest.
The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
