WASHINGTON - After dropping at match to St. John's on Friday morning, the Georgetown men's tennis team rebounded against Marist on Saturday afternoon and defeated the Red Foxes, 4-3, at the Sportsplex tennis facility. It was a matchup that saw both sides trade wins over the course of play.
The Hoyas started the afternoon on a high note, as the duo of Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) were triumphant over Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta, 7-6(8-6), playing from doubles No. 1. The Red Foxes would rebound, taking a match from the Hoyas at the No. 2 spot, but Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./Pendleton) and Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) responded by defeating Rudolf Kurz and Joseph Dube, 7-6(5) from No. 3 doubles.
A loss at No. 4 doubles would not deter the Blue & Gray, however, as Shane Korber (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) were triumphant over Timo Tanzer and Jan Dernic, 6-4, in the final doubles match of the day.
"The guys had a great win over Marist," said Head Coach Gordon Ernst. "They also battled so well against St Johns on Friday."
In singles play, Khanin defeated Bjerke, 7-6(2), 6-3, to pick up another point for the Hoyas. It was in the final two matches of the day that freshmen Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) and Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) shined for the Hoyas.
Lam overcame cramping to defeat Dube in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to tie the match at three points apiece. In the final match of the day, Beatty clinched the win for the Blue & Gray when he defeated Tanzer, 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-5.
"Every coach loves to see their freshman step up in crunch time," said Ernst. "Our guys certainly did so today."
The Hoyas' next match will be a meeting against BIG EAST opponent DePaul on Feb. 27 in Washington, D.C.
