DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Georgetown baseball team was swept in doubleheader on Sunday, dropping two tough games, 6-2 and 12-11, at Davidson. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), batting leadoff for the first time this season, went 4-for-8 with a double and reached base seven times.
Game One - Davidson 6, Georgetown 2 Georgetown had runners on base in eight of the nine innings, but left 13 men on base in a 6-2 loss to Davidson.
Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) skirted in and out of trouble in five innings of work. He put together perfect first and third innings, but gave up single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. He finished with five innings pitched, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out six. Shirley and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) each had two hits and were on base three times.
The Hoyas got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Busch laid down a perfect bunt single with two outs and went to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) then hit a ball down the left field line that went off the left fielder's glove for a two-base error, scoring Busch.
Already leading 3-1, Davidson added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School). In his first collegiate outing, Swad struck out the first batter he faced, but gave up three-consecutive singles to load the bases. A ground out scored a run and with two outs, a routine grounder to second base appeared to end the inning. However, Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) slipped on the wet outfield grass and threw wildly, allowing two unearned runs to score to put the Hoyas in a 6-1 hole.
The Blue & Gray got a run back in the seventh. With one out, Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) singled and Shirley doubled to put runners at second and third. One out later, Busch reached on an infield single to third to push Ryan across the plate.
Georgetown played solid defense, led by two diving plays on ground balls by Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) at third base. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) made several good scoops on low throws at first base and the combination of Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) and Busch made a perfect relay from right field to throw out a runner at the plate in the eighth inning.
Game Two - Davidson 12, Georgetown 11 The Hoyas got season highs in hits (12) and runs (11), but Davidson scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Georgetown 12-11 in a back-and-forth game that took three hours and 34 minutes.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started and went 4.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, with four strikeouts. Four Hoyas - Shirley, Bushor, Kuzbel and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) - had two hits. Shirley, Bushor and Carter each had two RBI as well and Kuzbel and Webber both scored three runs. Collins went 1-for-4 with a home run.
Georgetown went into the eighth inning trailing 9-8, but batted around in the top half of the frame to score three times and take an 11-9 lead. After two quick outs, Bialkowski singled and Kuzbel doubled to put runners at second and third. With Webber batting, Bialkowski crossed the plate on a wild pitch to tie the game. Webber, Ryan and Shirley all walked, the final one forcing Kuzbel home to give GU the lead, before Bushor lined a hard single that the third baseman could not snag, scoring Webber to bring the score to 11-9.
The first six batters reached base in the bottom of the ninth for Davidson off of Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) to win the game. Mathews had pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief before the ninth.
GU again got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of second inning. Kuzbel was hit by a pitch and Ryan singled to put two runners on with two outs. Shirley continued his hot day with a single up the middle to score Kuzbel and send Ryan to third. After the ball was back in the infield, Shirley bluffed toward second base, drawing a throw from the third baseman, allowing Ryan to cross the plate.
Collins crushed a long home run to right field in the third inning to extend Georgetown's lead to 3-0. It was the first home run of the season for Collins and the Hoyas.
After Davidson scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third, GU answered with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Webber singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan. A single from Shirley put runners on the corners with one out and Bushor executed a perfect safety squeeze for a single, scoring Webber and moving Shirley to second. One out later, Collins walked to load the bases and Carter hit a sharp single up the middle to plate both Shirley and Bushor.
Davidson got three runs right back in the bottom half of the inning on three hits and an error to bring it back to a two-run game, 6-4.
A bases-loaded walk by Busch, scoring Webber, brought the Hoya lead back to 7-4 in the top of the fifth.
The Wildcats scored five runs, three off of Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover) in the fifth to take their first lead of the game, 9-7.
Kuzbel doubled with two outs in the sixth and scored when the third baseman missed a high pop up from Webber to cut the Hoyas deficit to 9-8.
The Hoyas are scheduled to play midweek games against UMBC (Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.) at Shirley Povich Field and at George Washington (Wednesday, 2:30 p.m.) at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia. The Blue & Gray will then depart for its nine-day, seven game spring break trip to Port Charlotte, Florida.
