WASHINGTON - In what seems to be a trend for the Georgetown University softball team this season, the squad had its two Saturday games at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Fairfax, Va., canceled due to the rainy conditions. The team still played its game against Akron, however, and added a game versus host George Mason. The Hoyas game against Akron, originally scheduled for 10 a.m., was moved to 12:45 p.m. and the game with the Patriots was played at 3 p.m.
Georgetown split the day, falling 2-1 to Akron and defeating George Mason 6-2. The Blue & Gray now sit at 9-13.
Game One: Akron 2, Georgetown 1
Pitchers Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) split duties in the circle for the Hoyas, with O'Leary going 2.1 innings and Geehr taking the loss after 3.2 innings of work. Geehr's record is now 0-5.
The Zips were on the board early as an Alyssa Nicholas double brought in Kellie Roudabush to make it 1-0 in favor of Akron in the bottom of the first inning. Following a second inning with zero hits, Georgetown tied the game 1-1 as Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) singled up the middle and scored Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington).
Akron would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Roudabush doubled to right center and brought in Cassie Gillespie to make it 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) found themselves on base with one out, but a after Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) struck out swinging and Kane fouled out to third, the Hoyas were unable to stage a comeback and fell.
Game Two: Georgetown 6, George Mason 2
The Blue & Gray was able to rebound from its earlier loss and defeated the Patriots 6-2 with three different Hoyas having two hits each.
Hyson improved to 8-4 in the circle as she pitched the complete game striking out six over her seven innings of work.
George Mason was first on the board as McKenzie Jones singled to third base in the top of the second inning to bring in Liz Seymour to make it 1-0 in favor of the Patriots. The lead was short lived, however, as Hyson singled through the left and Kane scored following an error in the infield to tie the game at 1-1. Shortly after, Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) doubled to score Hyson and Samantha Giovaniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and gave the Hoyas the lead 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, GU added another run as a sac fly by Kane brought in Appelbe to increase the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Hyson scored on a wild pitch to move the score 5-1 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
Akron scored in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2, but the Hoyas would ice the game in the bottom of the sixth when a single to left field by Kane scored Elvina to make the final 6-2.
Kane and Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida led the way for the Hoyas as they both had two RBI in three at-bats.
"After a much needed day off, I thought the team came ready to play," said Head Coach Pat Conlan. "We had two solid games and put ourselves on the right track. I'm looking forward to getting back out to play Princeton Tuesday to continue our progress."
The Hoyas will play their first home games of the season when they face Princeton for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
