WASHINGTON - The Georgetown baseball team had 14 hits for the second-straight game to defeat Brown 12-0 in game one, earning a split of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Bears won the second game, 4-1. The contests were GU's first home games of the season at Shirley Povich Field.
Georgetown moves to 8-9 on the season while Brown is now 2-11.
Game One: Georgetown 12, Brown 0 ...
AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) had a grand slam and Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched six shutout innings to lead Georgetown to its first shutout since April 21, 2013 versus Seton Hall.
Hollenbeck went six innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) Vince Leoni (West Hill, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Four Hoyas had multi-hit games, led by three from Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton), who also had two RBI and two runs scored. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) all had two hits. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) added a pair of RBI.
GU went ahead early by putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Bialkowski singled and went to third when Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) and Busch were hit by pitches in consecutive at-bats. A passed ball scored Bialkowski before a two-out double from Bushor pushed both Pomeroy and Busch across the plate to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead.
The lead ballooned to 7-0 with four more runs in the fourth inning. Kuzbel doubled to lead things off and the bases were quickly loaded with nobody out when Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) and Carter both walked. Bialkowski then singled in both Kuzbel and Collins before Busch singled in Carter to make the score 6-0. Bialkowski eventually crossed the plate when a pickoff attempt at first base was thrown wildly.
Kuzbel singled in Shirley, who had also singled, in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 8-0.
Carter's launched his grand slam, a lined shot over the left field fence, in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Shirley, Kuzbel and Collins to provide the final score, 12-0.
Game Two: Brown 4, Georgetown 1 ...
The Georgetown offense sputtered, managing only six hits, as Brown took the second game and ended the Hoyas five-game winning streak.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started and went five innings, giving up four runs, although just three were earned, and while striking out four. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) pitched four near-perfect innings in relief, giving up just one hit without a walk and registering seven strikeouts, all looking. He now has 14 strikeouts on the season that have been looking, leading the entire BIG EAST.
Collins led the offense with three hits to lead Georgetown's offense.
GU scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Bialkowski led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Busch. With two outs, Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) grounded a two-out double down the left field line to put the Hoyas on top.
Brown took the lead with three runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo home run.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday at Shirley Povich Field. Freshman Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will get the ball to start the game for the Hoyas.
