WASHINGTON - Georgetown had eight hits and put runners on base in six of its nine at-bats, but could only manage one run, falling to George Washington, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played at the Colonials' Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia.
Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/The Episcopal School of Dallas) started and went 2.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks. The Hoyas got scoreless relief appearances from Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park). Davis went 1.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts while Swad went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's/Phillips Andover) had a single and a double.
For the third-straight game, Georgetown (1-6) got on the board first in the top of the second. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian led off with a single to right and, one-out later, moved to second on a single by Pomeroy. With two outs, Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School), in his first at-bat in a Hoya uniform, lined an 0-2 pitch into center field to score Carter.
George Washington (5-2) immediately tied the score in the bottom of the second and took the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.
The Colonials broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning off of Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover)
The Blue & Gray will play their next seven games in Port Charlotte, Florida at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Hoyas will first match up against Illinois State on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Notes - Austin Shirley (Strafford, Va./Conestoga) singled in the top of the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games to open the season.
