WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (1-2) hung on to down the George Mason University Patriots (2-2), 11-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played at GMU, but was moved to Georgetown, due to poor field conditions.
"In the first half, we played smarter, we played faster, we played with more confidence," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "In the second half, we didn't play very hard, we didn't play very tough and they outhustled us. Looking to Saturday, we need to show up every day and compete and we have to hold each other accountable. If we don't do that consistently, we'll be in a close game every game."
Junior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) and junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) both led the Hoyas with three goals apiece, Etchison also managed an assist. Senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added two goals, while sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added a goal and two assists.
The Hoyas outshot the Patriots, 27-16, but struggled on the draw with just eight to GMU's 14. Georgetown held the 22-13 advantage on ground balls and forced 23 Patriot turnovers while committing just 13.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the win in the cage with three saves in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) played for 23:30 minutes and posted two saves as well.
It was a game of runs for the teams with the Blue & Gray jumping out to an early lead.
The Hoyas controlled the first half posting a 7-0 run to start the game spanning 22 minutes. Tarzian started the scoring at 25:17 on a free position shot and five minutes later, Etchison tallied her first of the contest.
Lovett followed that up with a free position goal a minute later, before freshman midfielder Georgia Tunney (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored her first-career goal on an assist from Lovett at 17:30.
Bandos got into the act at 13:05 finding the back of the cage off of a free position attempt, before Tarzian took the pass from Etchison for the goal. Etchison completed the run on an assist from junior midfielder Kelsey Perselay (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) to make it 7-0 with 8:12 remaining in the half.
Despite the lopsided score, the Patriots didn't back down managing back-to-back goals before the break to make it 7-2 at the half.
Mason continued their run in the second with two goals in the first six minutes to make it a 4-0 run and pull the Patriots within three.
Bandos stopped the run scoring a goal off of the assist from Lovett at 24:01, but the Patriots came right back less than a minute later.
While draw controls were the key in GMU's run, it was Georgetown that used the draw to its advantage at 23:06 as senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) got the draw and ran down the field netting her first goal of the season and the third of her career.
The momentum was short lived, however, as Mason came roaring back with four-consecutive goals to tie it up at nine with 14:41 remaining.
The Blue & Gray stayed calm and answered less than two minutes later as Bandos came up with the unassisted tally to take the lead, this goal would serve as the game winner. Etchison added her third of the contest at 10:11 and the Hoyas stalled for the remainder of the game to come away with the 11-9 victory and the team's first win of the season.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts the Towson University Tigers. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
