WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (1-3) fell, 13-10, to the Towson University Tigers (2-0) Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown was in it early, but second-half runs by the Tigers were too much to overcome.
Junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) led the Hoyas with three goals for the second-consecutive game. Sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added two goals and an assist, while senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added a goal and two assists.
The Hoyas outshot the Patriots, 26-20, but struggled on the draw with just nine to Towson's 16. Georgetown held the 18-13 advantage on ground balls and forced 18 Tiger turnovers while committing just 14.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage with one save in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) played in the second half, and posted two saves as well.
Towson opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, but GU answered with back-to-back unassisted tallies from Tarzian and Lovett to take a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers regained the lead on a pair of quick scores, however, the Blue & Gray tied it up on a goal from senior attacker Sammy Giordano (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) at 13:10.
The lead was short lived as Towson rattled off three quick goals. Right before the half, junior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) found the back of the cage and made it 6-4 going into the break.
The Tigers opened the scoring in second half as well to go up by three. Bandos tallied her first of the contest at 27:21, but that was followed by a 4-0 Towson run to make it 11-5 with 13:30 remaining.
The Blue & Gray didn't give up with a 3-0 run of their own spanning eight minutes. Bandos started it out on an assist by Tarzian. Lovett added one at 8:45, and senior senior midfielder Mollie Caputo (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) rounded it out at 3:28 to make it 11-8.
Towson managed one goal, but Bandos had one more in her deck at 2:04.
In the final minute, both teams scored including senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) to make the final 13-10.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad hosts the No. 5/3 Duke University Blue Devils. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
