WASHINGTON - After playing six road games in an eight-day stretch, the Georgetown University baseball team returns to Shirley Povich Field this weekend to open BIG EAST play with a three-game series against Creighton. Due to the Easter holiday, the games will be played Thursday (3 p.m.), Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
Hoya Notes ...
Georgetown (12-12) will once again go with the starting rotation of senior lefty Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), junior right-hander Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman righty Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover).
Junior Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) is batting .565 (13-for-23) in Georgetown's past five games with three home runs, two doubles, eight RBI and an amazing 1.043 slugging percentage. In Tuesday's 16-9 win at George Mason, Collins was 5-for-5 with a home run, double and five RBI. In that game alone, Collins raised his batting average 32 points to .376 and moved up three spots to third in the BIG EAST. He now ranks first with a .554 slugging percentage, moving up from fifth, and went from second to a tie for first with 38 total hits. His nine total bases on Tuesday gives him 56 on the season, jumping him from third to first in the conference and he is now tied for first with four home runs this year.
Last Time Out ...
Nick Collins had career highs with five hits and five RBI as the Georgetown baseball team rolled to a 16-9 victory over George Mason on Tuesday afternoon. Collins finished a triple short of the cycle and had all of his hits by the seventh inning.. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) had three hits, was on base five times, scored two runs and had two RBI. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) had three hits and four RBI while Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) also had three hits. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) had two hits and scored four runs.
Collins' five hits were the first time a Hoya has had five hits in a game since Rand Ravnaas had five hits against Cincinnati on May 19, 2012. The 16 runs were a season high for the Hoyas and were the most in a game since GU scored 17 in a 17-15 win over UMES on March, 20, 2013. Georgetown also tied a season high with 19 hits making it the ninth time this season GU has recorded at least 12 hits.
Scouting Creighton ...
Creighton comes into the weekend with a 15-8 record following a 5-1 loss at No. 18 Nebraska on Tuesday. The loss ended Creighton's seven-game win streak, but the Bluejays have won 10 of their past 12 games.
Creighton ranks fourth in the BIG EAST with a .262 batting average. In the Bluejays' 15 wins the team is hitting .303, while in the losses Creighton is at .178. On the mound, Creighton leads the conference with a 3.40 ERA, but has a similar split in wins versus losses, posting a 5.73 ERA in the losses and a 2.23 ERA in victories.
Junior Reagan Fowler, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, leads the Bluejays with a .369 average (.450 over the last 12 games) while Harrison Crawford and Brett Murray are both hitting over .300. Rollie Lacy, Creighton's Friday night starter, comes in with a 2-0 record and 2.11 ERA in 21.1 innings, covering 10 appearances. Nick Highberger is 3-0 out of the bullpen while Ethan DeCaster has a 0.75 ERA in 10 relief appearances.
What's Up Next ...
The Hoyas will head back out on the road for four-consecutive games, starting with a midweek matchup at Coppin State on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. GU will jump back into BIG EAST action next weekend with a three-game series at Villanova.
