WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's tennis team was unable to keep up with a hot UMBC squad, and fell, 5-2, to the Retrievers on Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The Hoyas picked up points in singles play, as two freshmen emerged victorious in their respective matches.
Despite dropping the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, the pair of Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) defeated Daniel Gray and Alex Drean, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.
GU recorded victories in the No. 2 and No. 4 spots behind the play of Beatty and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School).
Lam defeated Melker Syard in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, from the No. 2 spot. Beatty found himself in a battle with Drean at the No. 4 position, but emerged victorious in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 8-8 overall. GU concludes regular season play on Sunday, Apr. 19 when it faces George Washington at 1 p.m. The match will be played at Georgetown Visitation Prep School.
